Where to Party in Southeast Asia

Southeast Asia proffers a tasty banquet of travel alternatives. Today we take a look at a sampler platter of party hubs, from Bangkok to Bali. Gili Trawangan, Indonesia
A hop, skip and catamaran ride from Bali, Gili Trawangan’s rep as a sinful island of rampant profligacy grew in the 1990s. Despite efforts to curb drugs and alcohol and focus on marine stewardship since, the island off northwest Lombok is still a magnet for party kids.

Seminyak, Bali, Indonesia
On Bali, Seminyak, of course, is a notable nexus of nightlife very popular with resident expats and internationals on holiday. This is the home of Ku Dé Ta, after all.

Bangkok, Thailand
Bangkok’s party bona fides need no grand intro. They get the Hollywood wash in films like The Hangover Part II and Bangkok Dangerous but, in reality, places like Soi Cowboy and Patpong are a lot more provocative.

Koh Phangan, Thailand
Koh Phangan, or Ko Pha Ngan, sits in the Gulf of Thailand in Surat Thani Province. This is the infamous refuge of the full moon party at Haad Rin Beach – a cliché backpacker party haunt par excellence.

Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam
The buzz on Hanoi is ceaseless but Vietnam’s foremost city gets gritty and libertine after dark. Precisely because Saigon is so exepnsive for expats, the nightlife scene is particularly piquant.

Vang Vieng, Laos
A mountain backpacker lair that was once the best-kept secret in Laos, Vang Vieng is well worth the four-hour shuttle from capital Vientiane for those who need to turn on, tune in and drop out for a few days.

Manila, Philippines
Some stereotype Filipino culture as naive, chaste and childlike but the underbelly of the Manila party scene is not so. You just have to know where to look. Start with the tony hotels of Makati.

Patong, Phuket, Thailand
A practical metonym for ‘party in Paradise’, Patong is Phuket’s ace in the hole. A few nights here may be more than enough to sate your inner party animal. Mercifully, Phuket is a big province.

Ko Phi Phi, Krabi, Thailand
The Phi Phis provide nightlife revelers with a place to crash between Phuket and the Andaman Sea coast of Thailand’s mainland. The islands made a swift recovery after the tsunami of December 2004. Ton Sai Bay is where to go for a stiff drink and to make new friends.

Boracay, Philippines
The go-to holiday island of the Philippines was once a clandestine escape for a lucky few in the know. Now Boracay welcomes tourists from all over the world and has some of the best hotels, bars and party vibes of any island in the world.

Golden Triangle, Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia
The cultural and entertainment enclave of KL is home to Bukit Bintang, where swish cafés and bars jostle for space with night market hawkers.

Nha Trang, Vietnam
Vietnam’s tourism juggernaut is the yin to Hanoi and Saigon’s yang. Nocturnal debauchery happens in the Biet Thu tourist district.
