Top 10 Most Anticipated Tech Products of 2012

From Apple's iPhone 5 to next-gen thermostats to OLED TVs, here are 10 tech products we're looking forward to seeing in 2012.

10. Facebook Timeline
Facebook's new profile layout, Timeline, is designed to be a better way to "tell your life story." Timeline was supposed to roll out a few weeks after its September debut, but we still haven't seen it (in mass effect) as of early December.

9. Windows Phone 7 Platform
Microsoft's efforts in the mobile OS arena have been greeted by big yawns from the majority of smartphone shoppers. But Windows Phone 7's prospects may brighten in 2012. The new Windows Phone 7.5 (Mango) software adds the features and fine-tuning that the OS needs to compete with Android and iOS.

8. Android 4.0 Phones
The latest version of Google's mobile operating system is already generating buzz in the mobile world. Android 4.0 offers a lot to love: a polished interface, improved multitasking, better search tools, and the intriguing-yet-gimmicky Face Unlock and Android Beam.

7. Xbox 360 Update
Will the next-generation Xbox arrive in 2012? The latest rumors from reliable sources, including Supersite for Windows editor Paul Thurrott, say the next Xbox is slated for a 2013 debut. Until then, Xbox fans will have to be content with software upgrades, including an Xbox 360 dashboard update sporting a Windows 8, Metro-style interface.

6. Apple iPhone 5
When Apple unveiled the iPhone 4S in October, many fans felt a twinge of disenchantment. The iPhone 4S has some nice changes under the hood--including the voice-recognizing personal assistant Siri and an excellent 8-megapixel camera--but it looks virtually identical to its predecessor.

5. Wider Choice of Tablets
Tablets are currently going in two directions, splitting into the "just good enough" variety and the "powerful yet pricey" business models.

4. Quad-Core Mobile Devices
Speedy dual-core processors, such as Apple's A5 in the iPad 2 and iPhone 4S, will soon be old news as even faster quad-core chips migrate to the mobile market. Chip maker Nvidia says that smartphones featuring its quad-core Tegra 3 processors may arrive in the first half of 2012. And quad-core tablets, such as the Tegra 3-powered Asus Eee Pad Transformer Prime, are already here. Qualcomm, meanwhile, says that its quad-core Snapdragon chips will appear in Windows 8 tablets in the second half of 2012.

3. Smarter TVs From Apple and Sony
Rumors of an Apple-branded TV set aren't new, but recent developments lend credence to reports that the folks in Cupertino are cookin' up something good. According to Steve Jobs's biographer Walter Isaacson, Apple's cofounder was obsessed with the smart-TV concept, and had been working diligently on a genre-defining television interface before he passed. Piper Jaffray analyst Gene Munster, a longtime Apple watcher, recently predicted that an Apple television would debut by the end of 2012 or by the start of 2013.

2. Microsoft Windows 8
Microsoft's next operating system promises to be everything. Designed to power both tablets and conventional PCs, Windows 8 is ambitious and risky. The new OS will feature the touch-oriented Metro interface that we first saw in Windows Phone 7. That means Microsoft's "reimagined" flagship OS will be the first Windows version since the iconic Windows 95 to revamp, rather than simply tweak, the desktop interface.

1. Apple iPad 3
If the gossip is true, the next-generation iPad will be a sight to behold. Its most compelling (alleged) feature: a 2048-by-1536-pixel display, offering four times the resolution of the iPad 2's 1024-by-768-pixel screen. Assuming that Apple maintains its tablet-upgrade cycle, we can expect to see the new slate in the spring (the iPad and iPad 2 each shipped in the spring).

Top 10 Alternative Gadgets for Apple Haters

Maybe you’re annoyed that they’re no longer the underdog. Or maybe you prefer the openness of Android and Windows to Apple’s walled garden. Or maybe you despise that people line up around the block to be the first to get new iPhones. Maybe you just hate fruit. Whatever the reason, you just don’t like Apple. Well, guess what? There are great alternatives to every product Apple makes, many of which are simply better. Here are our top 10 picks.

10. Best Airport Extreme Alternative: Buffalo AirStation AC1300/N900 Router
Not only does this $179 Buffalo router have Apple beat by having a name that’s four times as long, it’s the first with 802.11ac. This next-generation technology trumps the 802.11n radio inside the Airport Extreme by supporting blazing transfer speeds up to 1.3 Gbps in the 5-GHz spectrum and a still-sizzling 450 Mbps at 2.4 GHz. In our full review we also appreciated the quick setup.

9. Best iPod touch Alternative: Samsung Galaxy Player 4.2
Want all the functionality of an Android phone without the monthly data fees? The $199 Galaxy Player 4.2 is your best bet. It features a larger screen than the iPod touch (4.2 inches versus 3.5 inches), and better sound, thanks to a combination of front-facing speakers and SoundAlive technology. This device also comes with dual cameras and fun games such as “FIFA 12” and “Need for Speed Hot Pursuit.” We just wish the Galaxy Player 4.2 ran Ice Cream Sandwich instead of the older Gingerbread OS.

8. Best MacBook Pro 13-inch Alternative: HP Envy 14 Spectre
The HP Envy 14 Spectre almost looks like a dead ringer for the 13-inch MacBook Pro on the inside, from its black backlit keyboard to its large glass touchpad. But that glass treatment actually extends to the sliver palm rest and black lid, which makes this $1,399 Ultrabook scratch-resistant. And, unlike the $1,199 MacBook Pro, this machine features enhanced Beats Audio and a sharper Radiance HD screen (1600 x 900 pixels versus 1280 x 800). The Spectre is also lighter than the Pro (4 pounds versus 4.5 pounds), though you’ll have to be willing to forego a DVD drive.

7. Best Apple TV Alternative: Roku 2 XD
This one is an easy call. Roku simply offers a lot more content options than Apple TV, including Amazon, Netflix and Hulu Plus, as well as HBO Go and EPIX (through participating providers). In fact, Roku has more than 500 channels, delivering more live sports (MLB, UFC, NBA, NHL, MLS), more music (Pandora, MOG, Rdio) and more news (WSJ Live, CNBC, Fox, NBC). The Roku 2 XD also costs $20 less than Apple TV. The $99 Roku 2 XS model adds an enhanced-motion remote for games and USB and Ethernet ports.

6. Best MacBook Pro with Retina Display Alternative: Samsung Series 7 Chronos
No, nothing beats the dazzling Retina Display on Apple's new powerhouse, but not everyone has $2,200 to blow on a notebook. The 17-inch Samsung Series 7 Chronos ($1,499) packs a full HD matte screen along with a lot more storage than the MacBook Pro (1 TB versus 256 GB). The sleek aluminum Series 7 also packs a quad-core Core i7 processor, 8GB of RAM, and Nvidia GeForce GT 650M graphics. You don't have to give up a DVD drive, either.

5. Best iMac Alternative: Dell XPS One 27
Finally, there’s a Windows PC that challenges the iMac for all-in-one supremacy. The XPS One 27 sports a beautiful design with a quad HD display (2,560 x 1,400 pixels) along with awesome sound, courtesy of Waves MaxxAudio 4. Intel’s latest Core i7 CPU, Nvidia Kepler graphics and a 32GB mSATA SSD team up to provide amazing performance. Plus, unlike the iMac, the XPS One 27 features an antenna jack for HDTV broadcasts and HDMI input for connecting your set-top box of choice.

4. Best iPod nano Alternative: MotoActv
What the heck justifies Motorola charging $77 more for the MotoActv than the iPod nano? This combination watch and music player kicks the nano’s butt when it comes to fitness. The device offers built-in GPS for tracking running, cycling, golf and more. The MotoActv also syncs with a training portal so you can keep tabs on your progress and learns what songs push you the most to create a high-performance playlist.

3. Best MacBook Air Alternative: ASUS Zenbook Prime
The best Ultrabook yet, the Zenbook Prime has a full HD screen that's not only sharper than the Air (1920 x 1080 versus 1400 x 900 pixels) but offers richer colors and contrast. This ultraportable also boasts a revamped keyboard for more comfortable typing, fast Ivy Bridge performance and a better port selection. Not bad at all for $50 less than the Air.

2. Best iPad Alternative: Google Nexus 7
Not keen on spending $500 for a tablet? Get your hands on the Nexus 7, which delivers a premium design and Google's excellent Android 4.1 Jelly Bean software for $300 less. Unlike the iPad, this 7-inch slate easily slips in a breast pocket or purse, and it offers easy access to Google's ever-expanding selection of Play Store content, including magazines, movies and TV shows. You can also search with your voice (a la Siri) and type by speaking—even in offline mode.

1. Best iPhone 4S Alternative: Samsung Galaxy S III
Samsung's sequel runs circles around the iPhone 4S when it comes to features. You can tap two S IIIs together to beam photos and videos, keep the screen on with just your eyes and use all sorts of cool gestures. Plus, the S III has a pretty smart Siri alternative built in with S Voice. Samsung crams all of this and a much larger 4.8-inch HD screen into a device that weighs less than the iPhone.

Top 10 Smartphones To Kick Off 2012

IMHO, smartphones today are all very good at helping you stay connected and get a lot done on the go and while I have some preferences I also switch around a lot and enjoy every mobile platform. So, without further rambling, here are my Top 10 Smartphones to Kick Off 2012.

10. HTC Radar 4G
The HTC Radar 4G may not be one of the newest Windows Phone devices, but I have tried most of them and find it to be my personal favorite and one that I use every single day. It is inexpensive at just $99.99 with a contract and is a rock solid device that runs the latest version of Windows Phone without any problems or lag.

9. Samsung Galaxy S II
The Samsung Galaxy S II has variants on three of four major US wireless carriers (Verizon never ended up with one of these), and on several regional carriers, and is an extremely successful line that I still think deserves some consideration. The Galaxy S II is now getting the Android Ice Cream Sandwich update that makes it even better than it already was. The devices sports a 4.3 inch Super AMOLED Plus display, dual-core 1 GHz processor, 8.49mm form factor, 21 Mbps HSPA+ support, 8 megapixel camera, integrated memory and microSD card, 802.11 a/b/g/n WiFi, Bluetooth 3.0, and more. The camera is much better than the one found on the Galaxy Nexus (there is really no excuse for what Samsung did with the Nexus camera).

8. Samsung Focus S
I think the Samsung line of Windows Phones were the best available during the first year of this new operating system. Samsung upgraded their top of the line model with the Samsung Focus S and it is definitely a device to still consider on AT&T. The Focus S has the latest Windows Phone OS and comes in at only 8.5 mm thick. It has a 1.4 GHz processor, 8 megapixel camera, 1.3 megapixel front facing camera, 4.3 inch Super AMOLED display (Samsung knows how to make excellent displays), and support for AT&T's HSPA+ network.

7. Motorola Droid RAZR Maxx
Motorola and Verizon launched the new Droid RAZR late last year and then just a couple months later released the Droid RAZR Maxx. The RAZR Maxx has an incredibly large 3300 mAh battery that should easily get you through a day or two without charging. The device supports Verizon's super fast LTE and comes with an 8 megapixel camera with 1080p HD video capture capability, 4.3 inch Super AMOLED display, dual core 1.2 GHz processor, and more.

6. HTC One S
The smaller brother to the HTC One X is the HTC One S and it will be launching this spring on T-Mobile so I am likely going to pick one up to try. The One S has a smaller 4.3 inch qHD Super AMOLED display, 1.5 GHz dual core processor, 8 megapixel camera, Beats Audio support, and HSPA+ on T-Mobile's 42 Mbps network. Other than the display type and size, it is basically the same as the HTC One X. We don't yet have a launch date or price.

5. HTC Titan II
In addition to the Nokia Lumia 900 with LTE, AT&T customers are lucky enough to get to choose from yet another high quality Windows Phone device in the HTC Titan II. The Titan II builds upon the Titan with LTE support, a 16 megapixel camera, 4.7 inch Super LCD, 1.5 GHz processor, and 1730 mAh battery. I used the device a bit at CES and even though the display is 4.7 inches it doesn't feel that large due to the thin form factor.

4. Samsung Galaxy Nexus
The Samsung Galaxy Nexus was the first device to come with Android 4.0, Ice Cream Sandwich, and I enjoy using my SIM unlocked model on T-Mobile. It is the best Android smartphone I have ever owned and I would have rated it in the top three if it would have came with a better camera and battery life. It is one of the best Nexus devices though with rather high end specifications that include NFC, a barometer, 1.2 GHz dual core processor, 4.65 inch Super AMOLED HD (1280x720) display, and HSPA+ or LTE support.

3. Nokia Lumia 900
Regular readers know I am a major fan of Windows Phone and as we saw at CES this year, the Nokia Lumia 900 looks to be one of the best Windows Phone devices of 2012. AT&T just revealed the Lumia 900 will be launching for just $99.99 on 8 April and I am seriously considering adding an AT&T account and making this my Windows Phone device. 2. HTC One X
HTC announced that the One X will be coming to AT&T this spring and the device looks to take the lead as the top Android smartphone with amazing hardware, camera features that blow away nearly every other device, and audio enhancements that are sure to impress the audiophile. The HTC One X sports a Snapdragon S4 duel-core 1.5 GHz processor, 4.7-inch, 720p HD screen crafted from contoured Corning Gorilla Glass, HTC Sense 4.0 with Ice Cream Sandwich, Bluetooth 4.0, 8 megapixel camera with f/2.0 lens, and Beats Audio. Dropbox is integrated too so integrated storage isn't much of a limitation.

1. Apple iPhone 4S
The Apple iPhone is an extremely popular smartphone and after using my iPhone 4S on Verizon for several months I have to say it is one of my favorite phones ever. It may not give you all the customizability you want and the fastest data connection available, but the camera is fantastic, Siri is very useful, applications are outstanding, battery life is decent, signal strength is better than I have seen on any other Verizon phone, and the display is still better than anything else in the smartphone market.

2. Giant TV: LG 4K 3D TV
LG's smart TV offering this year is its 84-inch 4K 3D television. No word on pricing yet, but some reports are saying the 4K monster will ship later this year. The problem is there's not a whole lot of video out there shot at 4K resolution-- an emerging standard for resolution in digital film and computer graphics--so how often you'll be able to be dazzled by 4K in 2012 remains to be seen.

1. Giant TV: LG's 55-inch 55EM9600 OLED TV
It's a TV. And its organic light-emitting diode display technology is the future of flat-panel tech. OLED promises better picture quality than either plasma or LCD/LED--thanks to effectively infinite contrast (for realzies this time!), wide viewing angles and lightning-fast response times--combined with an unbelievable form factor. The winning LG measures just 4mm in depth, "three credit cards thick" as LG's Tim Alessi cooed accepting the award, and boasts a bezel around the screen just 1mm wide. It's basically all gorgeous picture.
